Austin News📰

Budget watch after the Prop Q flashpoint

The Austin City Council is facing some tough conversations following the defeat of Proposition Q. The measure—expected to raise roughly $110 million—was soundly rejected by voters (about 63% opposed), and now the city must reevaluate service allocations, including parks, EMS and public health.
This means: expect public-hearings, potential staffing reductions, and more community advocacy moments in the weeks ahead.

Culture note: Local documentary wins big

The documentary The Boy From St. Croix, about NBA legend Tim Duncan, has snagged the Audience Award at the recent Austin Film Festival. It’s a quiet but proud moment for our film scene and a reminder of Austin’s strong footing in storytelling.

New Things in Austin🆕

Sushi boutique: Walk-in only & totally curated

Check out the recently opened Shokunin on E 6th (1009 E 6th St). The menu features raw fish flown in weekly from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market — no tempura, no noodles — just pure sushi focused brilliance. Eater Austin
If you’ve been craving an elevated yet intimate sushi experience, this is it. Tip: arrive early (it’s walk-in only) and be open to the minimalist vibe.

A new bookstore hub in South Austin

The national bookstore chain Barnes & Noble Southpark Meadows has opened at 9600 S I-35 Frontage Rd. Their 20,000 sq ft location is perfect for curling up with a book and coffee, and adds a comfy neighborhood gathering space in south Austin.

Neighborhood tip: Bring your laptop, browse a few shelves, sip a latte and stay as long as you like.

Things to Do This Weekend đŸșđŸŽ”

What’s On This Week & Weekend

Here’s a curated list of fun stuff happening this week and coming weekend in Austin:

  • Blue Genie Art Bazaar – Starts Friday (Nov 14) and runs through Dec 24. A holiday-market staple filled with local makers: jewelry, art, candles and more. Austin Texas

  • Passport to the World Festival – Saturday Nov 15 from 11 a.m.–4 p.m., a family-friendly cultural celebration beginning with a Parade of Cultures at City Hall. Austin

  • Live music picks at ACL Live at The Moody Theater:

PETS!!🐕

Pet of the Week

Meet Koda!!

Koda is a mixed breed beagle that is 2 years old and is looking for a home. He is currently located at the Town Lake Animal Center.

Why Koda Might Be a Great Fit:

  • At ~2 years, Koda is young enough to have lots of fun ahead, but old enough to likely have some maturity.

  • At 32 lbs, he’s a manageable medium-sized dog — good for a variety of living situations.

  • Being a Beagle/mix means he might have that friendly Beagle temperament (curious, social, good with people) while also bringing mixed-breed uniqueness.

Editors Spot

From the Editors Desk

There’s something electric about Austin this time of year. The weather’s shifting, the calendar is filling, and our community keeps doing what it does best—showing up, exploring, embracing new spots, and caring for our city.

Whether you’re going to that art bazaar, listening to live music Friday night, or just strolling Barton Creek with your pup—do it with curiosity. Ask questions, chat with someone you don’t know, support local makers.

If you spot something curious—new mural, hidden food truck, pop-up event—reply and tell me about it. I’d love to highlight your find in next week’s issue.
Until then: keep exploring, keep connecting, and yes—keep Austin curious.

Cheers to the weekend ahead!
